The job is shifting from writing the thing to describing the thing. That changes who can build.
Anthropic’s 2026 research describes software development moving from an activity centred on writing code toward orchestrating agents that write it. You can already feel it in the tools: you describe a change in plain language, an agent makes it, you review the result.
What that means if you’re not a developer:
- The bottleneck moves. It’s less ‘can anyone build this?’ and more ‘can you describe it clearly and check it?’
- Taste and judgment matter more. When producing is fast, deciding what’s good — and what’s wrong — becomes the scarce skill.
- Small automations stop needing a developer. The little internal tool you’ve wanted for years is now a conversation and an afternoon.
- You still need someone who can verify. Agents make mistakes confidently and fast. Review is not optional.
The businesses that win here aren’t the ones with the cleverest tools. They’re the ones that can describe what they want precisely and tell good work from bad.
Put this into practice
Write down one small tool you’ve wanted for years. Describe it like you’re briefing a builder — that’s step one now.
